Berkeley is rich in important architecture, both commercial and residential. One of these architects was the English-born Walter Ratcliff (1881-1978), whose landmarks etch the environment. Alward collaborated with Gustave Carlson Design on renovating one of his houses. As a member of The National Trust of Historic Preservation, Carlson specializes in historic home renovation. He and Alward sensitively restored the two-level shingle-style gambrel house.
